A proud part of our heritage, the Clock Tower is a monument that commemorates the men of the merchant navy that were lost at sea during the Great World Wars of the past century. It was erected between 1919 and 1922 and is characterized by an elegant, « fine arts » style of architecture, as well as by the immense clock face that looks out in four directions. It is worth noting that its clock mechanism, manufactured by the company Gillett and Johnston of England, is almost an exact replica of ‘Big Ben’ in London. This flagship building acts as the entry to the Old Port, and was frequented quite often by the trans-oceanic commercial ships during first half of the 20th century.  At that time, the Clock Tower was also used as a hangar to warehouse the merchandise that made its way to the Quays.

Today, the Clock Tower looks out proudly towards the St. Lawrence River, and invites you to discover, from the observatory atop its 192-step staircase, a spectacular and unparalleled view of the river, the city of Montreal, and the Quays.
